Kayla Durand’s Piano Studio

Welcome to my piano studio, located in SW Portland, Oregon, where I teach students of all levels according to the rigorous Russian classical piano school method. I work with each of my students to develop a custom plan suited to their experience, goals, and musical preferences. My students play the best examples of piano repertoire from A. Scriabin to J.S. Bach, and many choose to participate in the Oregon Music Teachers Association (OMTA) Syllabus Program.

During recent years, I passed the OMTA Level 10 Syllabus with distinction, received the Dona & David Eason Piano Scholarship, received second place in the international US Open competition, and was awarded winner in 17 OR events.

I am currently teaching lessons in-person (virtual option available at student’s discretion). Please message me to check for availability.

Studio Information

Teaching method: My teaching follows the rigorous classical traditions of Russian piano, which I professionally studied for 16 years. During my lessons, we will work on musical theory, technique, and expression, as well as learn about the history of music and learn pieces from different time periods. Sometimes, students who have taken lessons with a less rigorous teacher have developed ineffective techniques which limit their progress, and for these students, I must return to the basics and teach them the correct techniques of hand position and movement. It may take many months to overcome bad habits, but these fundamentals are deeply important to every student and we will continue practicing until you are proficient.

Organization of lessons: I teach on a grand piano at my home studio in Southwest Portland or, if requested, in the grand practice room at the University of Portland. All my lessons are individual private lessons. The only exceptions are specially scheduled duet or trio practices, where the cost is split between participants.

Music instrument requirements: Even the most advanced electronic pianos do not have the same response, feel, and touch as an acoustic instrument. I expect each of my students to rent or purchase their own acoustic instrument to practice at home. Electronic keyboard is acceptable only for a short period until the student finds a suitable instrument.

Parental involvement: Parents are more than welcome to attend lessons, and should encourage their children to practice daily and schedule time for piano in their child’s calendar.
